The River Charles

You know those days when you’ve been writing blog posts, devising social strategies and trying to understand how to articulate data for an infographic and your eyes start to cross? When you are no longer able to shake your head and clear up your vision?

Maybe some of the elements that cause your eyes to cross are different, but the result is the same: you need to take a walk.

I’m lucky enough to work in a building that runs along the Charles River. There are a lot of things I like about this space, but I have to admit, this is my favorite feature. I’m a nature girl at heart, which is why I live in the “rural suburbs,” and having this element where I work is a boon to my morale.

I do, indeed, love that dirty water.

Sometimes life catches up with you and you feel like you’re underwater.

You wake up a half hour before your alarm, every day, and are out the door two hours later to spend nearly an hour and a half in traffic.

Then you work for eight demanding hours. And sit in just as much traffic as you did that morning, listening to a book, to get home.

Much of the time you try to cook dinner, clean up a little around the house and spend time with your husband.

But the studio is being built in your basement and that takes priority, understandably.

Even after your husband was away on tour for three weeks, there hasn’t been much time for the two of you because of aforementioned studio and all of the incredible people lending a helping hand.

So, at the end of each day, you’re too tired to blog. You write ideas down on Springpad, but you’re too tired to follow through, or too busy, or both.

And it results in a post like this, with an apology, and a question about whether or not anyone misses the regular updates?

Who knows. Things will calm down and I will write more. This will have to do for now.

How are all of you?

The true meaning of class

This morning at work, my boss, Beth, walked around the office putting vases of daffodils on everyone’s desks. She and my other boss, Meg, had scheduled a special company lunch for today, which included a special surprise.

Nearly all 30 of us gathered around the conference room table, Panera sandwiches in front of us, as Meg and Beth told us how much they appreciate how hard we have all been working. They handed us each an envelope. Each one contained a token of their gratitude and a hand-written note explaining why they appreciate us.

I can’t even begin to tell you how touched I was.

A few months ago I had written a post with my thoughts on class — it isn’t about being physically beautiful or done up, but about being a good person and treating others with respect.

We have all been extra busy at work over the last few months. While that hard work has been incredibly rewarding, it has also been difficult. Meg and Beth consistently thank us for our hard work and let us know that they understand where we are.

Taking this extra step, to let us know, even if it had simply been flowers or a special lunch, was so incredibly classy.

I know that I gush about my job on this blog quite a bit, but working for these women inspires me so much each day. They are the living proof that women really can have it all — successful marriages, careers, and great relationships with their children.

I hope each of you has something that reminds you that the sky is the limit in your lives, as well.
