Tour version 1.2: So you had a bad day, and then it got worse…

Friends —

It’s been quite a weekend. If you follow me on Twitter, it’s likely that you are aware Jay came home last night following news that the van would not be ready until Monday.  Of course, I had already booked a haircut and a night out with my old salon friends, but I didn’t expect him home until 8:30 p.m.

He got home at 6:30 p.m.

Alas, I got a haircut and had a really great time with my friends. We even pre-booked our outing for next month. It dawned on me that I really need to do something like that. Spending time with women, who have marriages and kids and full time careers, is so important. We can all level, even if I am a bit younger than them.

I was so happy to come home and look in the basement to see Jay, diligently working to remove viruses from his computer (remember how I said there were dudes recording bass in my basement Friday night? We think this is when the damage occurred.) We went out, grabbed a bottle of red, came home, cuddled with the dog and watched Frasier. It was just so fantastic.

I mentioned in a post a while back that the weeks before tour sometimes feel worse than when he is gone, because he is so busy wrapping up projects that I barely get to see him. This last day has been exactly what we needed.

Barring the fact that — and I can’t even make this up — we went out to his car this morning to go grab some breakfast and it wouldn’t start. Seriously. I had to jump his car. I swear, mercury must be in retrograde or something.

Anyway, we had a terrible breakfast and then he spent his day working while I continued reading The Secret Lives of Wives (so amazing. Every person everywhere should read this). It was nice to just be sitting in the same room together.

We went to Chili’s in Burlington for lunch because I needed to visit the Bare Escentuals store at the mall. When left, the car wouldn’t start. Again. To be fair, the battery is seven years old and desperately needs to be replaced. Thankfully AAA came in five minutes and we were on our merry way.

(I gave Jay a haircut today. Poor guy. I really need a lesson in cutting his hair so that I can do a better job. He is happy with it, though, so I guess it’s not all bad.)

Alas, he is back on the road (their first stop will be in Minneapolis) and I have learned a very valuable lesson. Jay leaving for tour is much easier when I say goodbye to him before I head off to work in the morning. Watching him leave is, for lack of a better word, terrible.

Now I am sitting in my walk-in closet office, drinking a glass of leftover red and waiting for Desperate Housewives to begin. I am already missing my husband terribly, and it has only been an hour.

But distance makes the heart grow fonder and, allegedly, helps marriages last longer.
